Space Utilization & Design: Designing Comfortable Study Rooms

It is important to get into good study habits, especially when going through high school or college, as this will really affect your ability to learn. A good ambience is also conducive to enhancement of memory and concentration. Therefore, effort must be put into designing the right kind of study area for your kids in the house.

Direction of Study Room/Table:

As per Vaastu, the study room should be located in the directions such as East, North or North-East of the house. These directions improve the power of concentration while studying. Make sure that there is no mirror reflection in the room. Also, never study under a beam. This may have the effect of doubling their work load and they may feel unnecessary pressure or burden.

Color of Walls:

The walls of study room should be painted in light colours rather than dark colours. Light colours enhance the learning and absorbing power of students. Avoid black colour in your study room at all costs.

Source of Light:

The study room should have proper light to avoid unnecessary strain and for the child’s easier education and growth. Sunlight gives us energy for doing work. So, as far as possible, the windows of the study room should be in the East and North of the room in order to invite maximum possible natural energy into the room. A table lamp is another source of proper light which helps in concentrating. It should ideally be placed in the South-East corner of the table.

Computers:

Computers are a great aid for studying, and also essential for most students, but make sure to keep it at a safe distance from the person using it. Keep it at least a foot away from you. Your eyes will thank you later.

Improvisation:

These days, with apartment houses, many people are not able to have a separate study room. They can convert one corner of their bedrooms into study units. An extended bedside table can be used as a study area, with open shelves to store books, keeping it light and avoiding pressures. Refer to the picture above.

Study tables can also be combined with TV units, with a sleek chair and small cabinet units for books, to accommodate in small spaces where a child can study inside his own bedroom comfortably.

These things will not only help the child to get a comfortable study space but also help them to have better concentration and will increase their likeness for studying.

Ohhh... I'm already in the most North East corner of the house. If I try to shift more, I'll end up in the neighbor's bathroom !

But will try to follow Saudamini's advice to open my books and try to study too. I knew I was forgetting something... :D
