Fougère Royale by Houbigant

Fougère is the French word for ‘fern’ and although ferns have no smell, it is said “if God wanted to give ferns a smell, he would have made them smell like Fougère Royale.”

It is believed that the creation of Fougère Royale by Paul Parquet for Houbigant (1884) marks the birth of modern perfumery, as it is the first perfume known to have made use of a synthetic molecule.

Launched at a time when natural materials were cheap and easy to come by, Fougère Royale created a sensation by using a synthetic molecule called “Coumarin” which is the principal ingredient of Tonka Bean (a material closely related to Vanilla).

At its heart lies a combination of Oakmoss, Lavender, Bergamot and New Mown Hay. The combination became such a hit that, today, a whole classification of perfumes (based on the above mixture) is called Fougère, and almost 50% of all men’s perfumes in the market are called Fougère.

The fragrance opens with the fresh smell of Bergamot, along with the dry smell of Lavender and Clary Sage. The body comprises of Carnation, Geranium, Heliotrope and Orchids. The dry down is a lovely Vanilla-Cinnamon accord, along with the smell of wet forest floor.

The stand out in the perfume is a smooth, freshly cut hay smell which provides a compelling depth to the fragrance, a kind of earthy quality that is peerless.

Its raw power and beauty make this assertive scent one which any man could pick up happily. Its richness and “laid back” attitude conveys the image of a warm happy summer day.

The success of Fougère Royale inspired a host of perfumes -- Jicky (1889), Canoe (1935), Paco Rabbane (1973), Jazz (1988), Brut Faberge (1964) -- and almost all did very well commercially, but none compares to the beauty that is Fougère Royale.
