One of the major causes of stress in home renovation ventures is the fact that different people have different tastes. Every member of the household wishes to have a say in the decision making process. The bigger the family, the more difficult it becomes to reach a common “one-size-fits-all” solution! Let alone big families, even single couples often find it hard to reach a mutually acceptable decision for the new design of their home!

Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus!

Men and women have completely different concepts of using space. For example - a nice corner space in a bedroom might be utilized by a man for their study area/ office work, where as a woman would prefer to use it for a nice cozy seating for the two of them. As men and women are different in their outlooks and preferences in life, similarly they have very different concepts of spaces in their home. Women are usually very particular about their kitchen, dining spaces and the living rooms (where most of the guests will be entertained), but the men will be more concerned with their corners -- bar areas, relaxing zones, bedrooms and bathrooms. So each share and have different concepts for their own particular spaces.

Design Tips for New Couples

There are several key points that must be kept in mind by a young couple who moves in and starts doing up their home together. First of all, they should focus on getting the layout of their house correct, particularly the movement pattern of the house according to their use, so that there is a maximum utilization of space. Also they must try to keep the interiors very sleek and simple, and each furniture piece should be proportionately right so that it becomes a piece of art. Proportions plays a major role in interiors, which helps keep up in pace with the rapidly changing world of interiors.

How to Resolve Differences in Design Choices?

While there is no definite answer to this, there certainly are a lot of creative ways in which a couple can dissolve their differences over designing and sharing space, and can strike a compromise, retaining their individual comfort zones when doing up their new home. While designing any space, the couple should strike a balance somewhere, keeping in mind the different aspects of the designing. For instance, if they are getting their living room designed, and both have different outlook on the type of furniture, furnishing or the color scheme, they may still find it exciting to design the place by going ahead with one's idea of the furniture and other's idea of the color scheme, thereby striking a cord of balance between their personalities.

Designing your own home is a memorable and very joyful experience, and these memories should not be tarred by minor differences of tastes. Thinking out-of-the-box to find mutually acceptable solutions can usually lead to the creation of some really unconventional designs and space utilization for one’s home.
