5 Reasons Why You Should Blog?

Blogging has become a sort of fashion today – the “in-thing”, you can say – especially in that segment of the world population which uses the internet. If you go to a class re-union, for example, the first thing you’ll be asked is – okay the first thing will still probably be “How are you?” – but, immediately after that, someone is sure to pop the question “So do you have a blog?” Oh alright then, maybe you’ll be asked about FarmVille before that! But the thing is – blogging is also eventually going to pop up in those early conversation starter questions!

However, that’s not one of the reasons that I would recommend blogging to anyone. Peer pressure doesn’t make its way into my list of 5 reasons why you should start your own blog.

  1. Unleash Your Creative Potential. One thing I ought to make clear at this point is that “blogging does not necessarily mean “writing”. You might not be a writer, and yet you can blog. Any of your hobbies can be converted into blogging in fact. Photographers can create their very own photo blogs. A lot of Indian housewives simply share their favorite recipes on their blogs. You can upload pictures of your paintings, sketches, embroideries, or any other works of art/craft. You can make a record book of your kid. There is no limit to what you can use your blog for.

  2. Express Yourself. Having a blog gives you a personal space where you can freely express yourself. Had a bad day at work? Think that the new fiscal policies of the government suck? Enjoyed a new movie and want to share your views about it? Upset with your husband for forgetting your anniversary? Your blog can be the space for you to let out all your pent-up feelings – the good ones as well as the bad ones.

  3. Connect With Like-minded People. Caught in the rut of daily monotony, most of us tend to get cut-off from social life completely, and I’m talking specifically about India here. After my relocation to this place, I found it impossible to make new friends here for a long time. And blogging really helped me connect with people like myself – who shared the same interests and were passionate about similar things.

  4. Discover Hidden Talents. Hey none of us honestly realize the full extent of our own potential. Bloggers have gone on to become published writers and poets. Amateur bloggers suddenly realized they had a talent for writing fiction in a unique way. Some bloggers turned into entrepreneurs. Who knows what hidden talents might surface once you start exposing yourself to various creative media?

  5. Get Famous. Rashmi Bansal (Who still blogs at a blogspot domain, and still uses one of its very basic templates!) is now a writer of two published books. Her first book, Stay Hungry Stay Foolish, has even been translated into several Indian languages. And if that sounds too far-fetched a dream to you, then you can start small. The knowledge that a hundred odd people follow your work and enjoy it, gives a completely different sense of belonging and fulfillment. You have to experience this actually, to understand the feeling.

I have deliberately targeted this article for individuals and not business companies. Obviously, business companies have a completely different set of reasons to start a blog and use it to leverage their Marketing Model and Customer Relationship Management. But perhaps we’ll cover that in a later post, in our Entrepreneur section. In the meantime, ponder over these 5 reasons for starting your own blog, and if it feels like your cup of tea, then don’t hesitate – simply jump in!
